As above. Im scared of running out of petrol so before I fill up a gerry can and drive til she splutters to see if there's a fuel warning light I thought Id ask.
Drive it until the needle just reaches the start of the red reserve section. (Let it settle whilst on level ground.) Then go straight to the petrol station, fill to the top and see how many litres it has taken to fill. The tank holds 55 litres, so a bit of quick mental maths gives you the amount that was left in the tank. Your average mpg can then be used to determine roughly how far you can travel once the needle hits the reserve. If you are feeling brave, do the same thing, but leave the fill up until it hits the bottom of the red zone and touches the white line. In all my Mk2 GTIs, this has still left 5 litres in the tank, or about 30-35 miles.
on my gti the needle went below the red, can't remember the amount of times i started the car and the needle went down daren't try it with the vr6 tho' Edited by: gti8v
my car is frequently wayyy below the red.. like the needle doesnt even really move when you turn it on...
i can get mine right past the white line and it still runs but i know the limit from experience as I have run out a couple of times!
VW fuel gauges are rubbish. Best bet is fill it right up, run it to the edge of the red and fill up again. The tank is 55L so if you put 40 in you know you still have 15L left in reserve. Mine drinks 35L to the red, so only really using just over half the tank capacity.
Aye, if the lift pump has ever been renewed the float arm has normally been bent by some cack-handed shite as they tried to get it out of the tank. You could try re-bending it, but I suppose it would be a good idea to carry a spare can or two while experimenting with the position, 'til you get it bang on..... The only fuel light mine has is the lighter flame as I spark up a ciggy to while away the wait for the RAC......
The only time I have ever run out of petrol was ina n old Escort. The gauge stuck at a quarter - guess who didn't realise. I walked four miles to get a can of petrol, popped it in and tried to start it - but I was on a steep hill and it wouldn't pull the fuel through. I walked a bit further that night before it fired up again...
is it really that hard to fill up when its getting low ? you have to buy the fuel anyway so why try and run around on the last few drips?
