Hello, i have fitted Mk4 rear brake calipers to my early '84 Mk2 but I cant figure out what handbrake cables I should be using - I have a set of TYP19 ones and a set of 90 spec ones and neither will fit. I have read people cut down the cables tubes under the car, is this the best way to do it? What cables should I use?

    Cheers in advance

    Dan

You use the TYP19 ones and you will need to rerouted so run under the beam to fit
Plus you'll need move the clip that holds the brake pipe the other way up

    It should look like this

Plus make sure you have the right cables ie not ones for drum brakes or something else daft like that
Also remember you has movement in the tubes the cables go through

If you don't do the above you would need to mount the callipers upsidedown
Which you s a pain to bleed

either way you might find the pre-87 mk2 gti cables are a touch too short, in this case chop the guide tubes down about 10mm and you'll be sorted. I had top do this on my mk1 cab plus MK3 calipers redone to fit the right way up, even with the correct genuine VW scirocco 16v handbrake cables

aye john they can be a bit on the short side sometimes not leaving much room for the lock nuts
depends on the cables i've had ones that were ok and one that were on the short side
even had ones i had to pull the guide tubes out a bit as they were on the long side
no rhyme or reason to it [:x]

then you get someone giving you the wrong one

the guide tubes do push in a far amount
i never had to cut mine but 10mm could handy thats for sure

yeah the cables, beam, calipers etc all came off another mk1 and so he said no mods were needed but on mine i just couldnt get the nuts threaded. so i thought outside the box

actually thinking about it on a mk2 better to pull the tubes a bit if you can as you say, trouble is on a mk1 they're welded to the floorpan so out came the dremel
