In a bit of a dilemma. With my cops giving me nothing but trouble (keep blowing). A local guy who is quite familiar with megasquirt has suggested I convert to edis as it will be more reliable than my current setup. Is there any disadvantages to converting to edis? It's a mk2 golf 1.8 turbo on megasquirt. It's my daily car and realistically I can blow a coil a week easily and it's driving me insane! Any help would be great. Thanks in advance!

Ed, blowing a coil a week sounds insane doesn't it? There has to be another factor at play surely, rubbish coils, wrong plugs, wrong type of signal from the ecu or something?

I could blow one daily if I used the motorway. I've used genuine vw. Oe quality. And cheap nastys. I've currently got iridium plugs in but I've also had bosch. No change. Eddy has already given me a solution to my problem. But I don't have the skill or knowledge to carry it out. My only other option is to convert to edis. hence the question.

EDIS is an old Ford system that was used on MS1 PCB 2.2 prior to extra software for spark.

If you are inferring 4 pole coilpack that may need ECU internal nods to work.

I doubt you would use edis as this is the ford system which requires a 36-1 trigger wheel, he probably meant to use a edis coil pack, I have been happy with mine on my golf but it all depends how your ecu is currently setup if its been setup as wasted spark currently with internal igniters then its a simplish swap. however if its been setup as sequential spark or as a logic level ignition (for coils with internal igniters) then its going to be more work to add in the extra components...

what coil packs are you using at the moment?

There is some fundamental problem with the ECU hardware if this is happening.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't convert to a Ford coil pack?

Nope, none. If you get a dealer original, they are the best wasted spark coil packs available.
