As above really, has anyone used the Elring branded head gasket sets on any of their VW's in the past ?

If so, what was the quality like ?

I can get the head gasket set for my 1.8T (mk2) for a good price, but I don't want to purchase it if the quality is poor. Reviews on Google seem to be good, but thought I'd get some opinions from you guys first.

( Btw I haven't diagnosed it being the HG yet, but I'll be whipping the head off this weekend coming, and if it is this I'll need to purchase it ASAP. )

    Cheers & Merry Xmas :)

They are part of the klinger group world leader in gaskets
If you believe in that kind of thing
So you should be fine using a Elring gaskets
Never used them but use klinger gaskets day in day out at work
Just make sure you use good studs

    I echo vrbanana.

Got a Elring VR6 MLS gasket, fitted on my Golf 3 (Der Ankor) when I did a head upgrade and no problems.

    Cheers Edd.

I shall be ordering one this week I think.

Hoping the head isn't cracked, and it was just down to a blown HG due to it overheating.

I'll find out this weekend. Might need your advice on getting someone to skim the head locally too

What's the best thing to use as a locating pin when fitting a new HG and head ?

Cut the heads off two of the old head bolts, and trim a slit in them, so it can be twisted out.

Any other suggestions or is that the easiest way ?

just put it in place, lower the head in place a put new bolts in. It should move that much. No need to faff around cutting bolts up. Ur get ARP studs, They'll keep it in place and are reusable

I have done that in the past.

As above, it's not that important, but at least you know you're not scuffing the gasket, especially if you're lifting it on yourself. (alone)

True. A friend of mine (my MOT tester) said not to bother with using any locating pins.

Iirc, the bolts which were used on this engine when it was rebuilt (uprated rods ect) used ARP bolts.

Im guessing these will be stamped ?

I'll find out this week. Hopping to get the head off and see what's been causing coolant to get into cylinder 3 ?
Hopefully a blown HG after it overheated and nothing else.

    Seems a good method.

ARPs (if used in the head) will be studs and nuts rather than bolts.

    You'll soon see what's fitted.

I would find out what size socket you need if it has ARPs fitted, you'll need a bi-hex (12 point socket) being American it may be imperial rather than Metric.
