Can anyone recommend a service? I'm thinking of taking a sample of the old oil in the Audi in order to find out if there's much bearing material in it.
Surely if you can't really see anything with the naked eye then there's not a problem. I reckon most used oil would contain something or other under a microscope. You could drop sump and have a better look in the bottom as the drain plug oddly dosnt sit right at the bottom So there's always small dregs that don't come out ! If sump was dropped you could take off a crank main cap just the one to give an idea of condition
I used to work in an oil analysis lab when I was a student, for Gulf Oil. These lads are good, in yorkshire http://www.millersoils.co.uk/services/oil-analysis
Interesting, all I can say about my student days is that been to the middle of the Humber Bridge inside the deck (apparently since you couldn't see out). Still haven't decided on who to use for this. Lots of companies mention various further tests that can be carried out TBN, TAN, etc, but no pricing except for The Oil Lab who want far too much just to check the grade of oil.
Picked FA-ST in the end. https://www.fa-st.co.uk/oil-analysis/lube-oil-analysis/ Bit more expensive, but they have narrow tube sample kits and syringes listed in the shop. Since the 19th of January they're a wholly owned subsidiary of Miller Oils.
