hi im trying to decide on a engine change in my 1.4 golf
i'm thinking at the moment the 1.4 16v engine from the 6n polo
or the mk4 golf 1.6, not sure if their 8v or 16v?
and has anyone had much experience with the 1.6 100bhp engine from the mk3?

Tbh, its too much work for not much gain.

Why not go ABF 16v, VR6 or 1.8T. All cheap'ish, easy to carry out and well documented on here.

An ABF can return good MPG. Its mainly down to your driving style and if the engine is running correctly that gives you less mpg. ;)

Really do agree with Richard Mk2 all the work to swap a motor you really should aim for the best gain you can get.

As for mpg take it easy and they can be quite good http://http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.php?264862-best-mpg
Ok these are mk2's so a bit lighter but you can see the potential us there.

if you go for the 1.4 16v easier to change on the v5 as no proof needed, plus you stay in the cheap tax bracket. only 110-2 bhp though so its still not going to feel liek a 'real' gti, but it depends what you want the car for really. I recon a 1.4 16v would be perfect in my wifes seat ibiza just a little bit more power to make it bearable. just got to try and convince her its a good idea

Don't need to convince her we'll just do it quietly when she's distracted... Not like it would take THAT long...
