Hi all im new on the scene and am looking forward for help and helping others. i recently purchased a golf DTI 1.9 ENGINE.....CODE:ATD ...red DI I purchased this car for 170 pounds and it has no marks or rust, interior is mint BUT the engine is fudged the garage said it has a hole in the block!!! the previous person put unleaded in and ran it, since then they drained the petrol and changed the fuel filter and put the right juice in to get this running all i saw was a big cloud of smoke over the road... i have experiences with garages and sorry to say but i dont trust them to much and would rather fix and ask people that know these cars a lot more than me. what would be the best way to check of a hole inside the block maybe a compression test? or just take the head off and inspect? i have been offerd a avf engine from a passat with the red DI, would this be a straight swap with the mounts and externals? would i need the ECU for the avf engine? sorry for all the questions.
A hole in the block would be pretty obvious... And the engine likely wouldn't run, or if it did there'd be an almighty racket (holed blocks tend to be from snapped conrods trying to escape!) If it has somehow punched a hole through a cylinder, internally (ie; between cylinders) then a head-off inspection would be your only option. But, TBH, such a failure is pretty exceptional and rare. And, again, would make a hell of a racket even if it did run. A point to note; any red lettering on the rear TDI badge was purely at the discretion of the original dealer that sold it, and has no actual meaning whatsoever in relation to engine-specs...
hi i have been told by more than one person that the following badges :- tdi all silver 100bhp tdi (red i only)110bhp tdi (red d and i)130bhp my brother has all silver letters i have red di and he cant keep up with me.so maybe the red letters have a meaning it would make sense.
Yeah, that's the myth, and some dealers may have badged them up as such, but in reality it was never an official VW designation. Some dealers didn't use red letters at all, some used all red, and others assigned them arbitrarily.
yep i suppose they do "big em up"with some eyecatching badges.thats why i checked mine out and states 130bhp on the v5. so beware of red diesel badges sometimes they dont mean frickall.possibly more so with used car lots i reckon.
aye the badging can be a bit hit or miss mine is a AJM 115 it has the red D and I i think you going to run into a few problems using the passat engine one is the turbo/manifold will different to one on a avf 130 bhp engine used in the golf other thing's maybe different to you may have to swap over parts from the engine you have you dont say what age the golf is and what year the passat is depending on what age it is has a big bearing on how easy the ecu swap is more info needed
If it's any help ATD is the 100bhp version. It's often easier and cheaper to replace the engine for a good secondhand unit, then the cost and time to repair yours. Obviously this depends on the damage
Thats right red di are pd engines and are 115 and 130 units, 110 are true tdi and are red i and silver tdi are 90 bhp units, didnt audi have the 100 bhp engine? Also did vw do a DTI?
aye your right but you do see the odd 115 with the older GT tdi badge or just the red i mine is a import most import gt tdi's have highline on the data sticker
Then why have i never seen a 90bhp red TDI then? point me to a link that proves your right and ill belive you simples lol
Unfortunately I can't link you to a personal conversation with my local dealer's Service and Parts Managers... lol As said some dealers may have followed such a pattern, but without examples of each variant, known to have come from one dealer and all known to still be sporting the badges they left said dealer with, we'll never know definitively...! A lad I used to work with had all red TDI and the silver GT...claimed it was 190bhp. Quick check of the engine code told him it was 90bhp. lol
