Hi guys, really need your help, how do I remove the front downpipe on my mk2 16valve?I have removed thesix nuts which attach it to the manifold, but it seems like there is no way enough clearance to pull the pipe from below the car.......

What I did was undone on the top of the front, rear engine mount and gear box mounting. Removed the studs from the manifold, cut the downpipe before the silencer, pull the engine forwards to extract the manifold and downpipe attached in one piece (with a bit of twisting. I found I could get the whole lot out and separate the two much eaiser without having to drop sub frame etc.

To put a new one in I would put the downpipe in in the same way as it came out and join the manifold and downpipe together in situ. Then re-attach the manifold.

Sometimes you have to drop the subframe a bit.

    Kinda annoying.

Have you got power steering? You might *have* to drop the subframe if so - with a non PAS 16v you can get it out but it is a fiddle.

Support the engine/subframe with a trolley jack or two and remove the 4 bolts, the rears go through the wishbone too - hope yours ain't seized in like mine were when I fitted my Eibach ARBs - One of them snapped [:^(]

It can't be dropped far as the steering column is still attached to the rack, but should drop down enough to get the downpipe out.
