Is it a good idea to wrap the manifold and downpipe in exhaust wrap?

    Cheers

Yes. It moves the heat down the exhaust to where there is more air flow.

If you use some tie-wraps to get the wrap as tight as possible first, then put the clips on, clamp them up, then cut the tie-wraps off.

I have ued the technique on those stainless tie wraps of clamping the tail end near the tie end ball bearing bit, and levering with a large flat blade screwdriver to 'tighten the last little bit'

I have abandoned using heat wrap as it does not last, gets cooked, melts into glass, fractures, falls off and then looks like the mummy from totancamun in about a year.

Ceramic zirconium coating now does my heat shielding/insulating. Far more durable. (at a price of course)

Would you know roughly how much a manifold like in altern8's post would cost to ceramic coat?

285+ zircotec price, perhaps a little less if they class it as "small"

I got a special gun from work for doing up stainless cable ties, it's 100quid though :( before we had that, used to use pliers held near the head then used to leaver/pull more through till its tight. Works good!
