Mark II Golf GTi 8v standard. Hi all, She's sick again........ Recently, my Golf has been jumping out of fifth gear on the motorway. This usually occurs after I have covered about 70 miles plus, then it tends to do it every 2 to 4 miles. This does not happen under harsh acceleration - I have tested it this way and brutal pumping of the gas on the motorway is fine. The car has covered over 180K. Four questions: 1. Would a transmission oil change help? 2. I am thinking of redoing the linkages, as shown by Rubjonny, what are the GSF, or VAG numbers, I think GSF have stopped this? 3. Where can I buy the gear alignment tool, I cannot find it on Ebay anymore? 4. Is this a more serious problem than linkages and oil? Thanks again. Best Joker
Sounds like the box is low on oil, and that 5th gear end is overheating and playing up. It might already be mullered, but change the oil anyway first, it'll only cost a tenner. Bet you'll only get a cup full of oil out of the thing!
Thanks Dear Hotgolf, I did as you said and you were right! I grabbed a beancurd tray and an empty large can of Jolly Green Giant sweetcorn. Just about filled the sweetcorn can and the oil was a horrible murky muddy brown. Two litres of Grandville hypoid 80-90 later, I was tooling it down to Brighton and it worked sweetly. Mind you, it was -1 degrees and snowing, so who knows? I am going again tonight and will hope for the best. Many thanks. Joker
mine did this and then about a month later it just exploded 5th as if you had the clutch on in 5th lol i advise getting the number off the guy with 5th gear for sale! lol
Thanks............ Dear Matt, Thanks, if you could get in touch with me via my private message, that would be much appreciated. Best Joker
Thanks... Dear Matt, Yes, you could well be right. The guy I bought it off specialised in VW Golfs, raced them and seemed to know his stuff. When I asked him any other stuff I should keep in mind, he advised regular gearbox oild changes. Whether or not he did it to that actual VW, I question. Best Joker
hmmm @ regular changes. maybe because it was leaking it? i did mine when i got the car at 144k and there was plenty in there but it was black as a black thing. i changed that again after another 60k miles and it came out clear worst case youll need a replacement gearbox. second hand, the one i bought once cost about 100
VW don't specify a service interval for the gearbox oil - just keep it topped up. Changing it won't hurt though.
Definitely just needs to be topped up and hopefully not damaged your 5th Gear with overheating, had same issue but we mullered 5th gear on Taks car. Use Redline MTL/MT-90 you can actually feel the diff (not just a hyped up)
apparently MT90 isnt right for the 020, something about the way it is formulated can attack the syncros iirc? not really sure on that one, aren't the 02a syncros made out of the same stuff? anyway, back on topic. luckily changing the 5th gear isnt that scary on the 020, doable without any special tools: 5th swap via brokes site diy 27mm tool
Thanks.. Dear Matt, Thanks again. No, the bottom of the gearbox has always been dry and when it has been MOT'd in the past, the mechanics have always commented on how dry it was for a Mark II Gti. It was more the point I was a prize *rick and did not check it, like I do everything else. Have covered 700 miles since and it has been sweet and returned slightly better fuel economy. Best Joker
Thanks... Dear Mike, Thanks. I am disgusted with myself I let things get so outa hand! Cheers for the advice. Best Joker
Thanks... Dear aminder, Thank you for chipping in and suggesting this oil. Would you be so kind as to tell me where I can buy this? Best Joker
Hi rubjonny, Thank you for your thoughts on the MT90 oil. Is what I put in,(Grandville Hypoid) appropriate for the my 1989 Mark II 8V Gti? Secondly, I am going to do the linkages on my Golf soon, but cannot find the alignment tool! The link you sent me for Ebay does not seem to work, either. Can you help? Thanks for the link . Thanks Club Gti for pulling me out of the *hit again. Best Joker
not sure on the oil im no expert! opies oil does the MTL which is supposed to be top notch for 020 boxes, cwertanly worked for me Anyway! got a linky for the tool for ya clicky sorry if anything i have said doesnt make any sence ive had a few dark rums now and its aflicted me pretty badly
