My son has a learner policy on a 63reg Corsa 1.0 but when he passes his test he would like to swap that for a 1.3 Ryder (if he can find one). Could a new driver insure a 1.3 as a classic car? He did a quote for a 1.4 Mk3 on confused.com and that came up £1500 more than the Corsa
Think footman james offered something, a lot will only do classic if driver over 21. Ed is with Collingwood as a learner, but they wont continue after pass test. Sainsbury's actually insured a heavily modified supercharged classic mini, but for me, perhaps talk to them, were very helpful.
A lot of classic car insurance firms don't like new or young drivers on classic car policies from what I've heard when I have taken out classic insurance on a car as they see them as high risk assuming they are just after cheap insurance.
As said above most classic/specialists are off limits for young drives (Footman, Lancaster, Brentacre). You sometimes get lucky with Adrian Flux and get a good deal. Failing that, if you have multiple cars then something like Admiral multi-cars works out incredibly cheap. You can also ask the provider to make the policy holder a experienced driver (yourself) but explain the main driver your son. Obviously if your son has an accident it will affect your no claims but it can sometimes drop the quote by a huge amount. Just make sure you're very clear that your son is the main driver, otherwise it would be classed as fronting.
He is with Flux as a learner, they were a bit cheaper than Collingwood. Also because of COVID he’s been insured with them over a year so maybe they will be worth a try. I’ll have a ring around a few of the places mentioned and see how we get on. Thanks
I use Carole Nash for the E28 & GTI but of course it's just me and I'm by no means in the full flush of youth at this stage but you could give them a bell and see
Found a bargain near me in Burnley https://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans...tent=app_ios&utm_medium=social&utm_source=sms
Strewth, paid about a fifth of that first one in Oldham. Gumtree bargain, guy didn't do Ebay, so luckily had a smaller audience
That looks like a very nice example but its a lot of money even with only 43k. I have been watching the market for a while as I'm sure many on here have. It seems 5 doors are worth a lot less than 3 doors. I would expect to be buying a nice GTi for that money although that wouldn't help your son's insurance. It's very unlikely that you will get classic car insurance on an under 25 yr old. Most, companies, if not all, will need the insured party to own another car for daily use and for the classic to be garaged. I hope you can prove me wrong because it will be cheaper for you and me Definitely just put the details through GoCompare or similar, you may be pleasantly surprised.
5 door may be cheaper to insure also. Always used to be the way with escorts etc, and recently looking at A3s the 5 door was a lot less than the 3.
I wouldn’t want a 5 door. I will put a local wanted advert on the Internet, some old dear might have a minter sat in a garage.
I recently purchased this car. Excellent condition, the car was a favorite of the previous owner. The price was $12,000. There were cheaper options, but this one fit perfectly. Regarding insurance, I searched the Internet for average car insurance cost per month, and found a couple of great deals. At first, I didn't really delve into the nuances of insurance companies until I let my wife drive the car. It turned out that insurance payments are one big problem. Major part was covered by insurance, but i still paid a lot of money.
