puttin 16v engine and box in my 88 mk1 cabby cabby has 90mm driveshaft flanges, new 16v box has 100mm flanges i have the old box from the cabby with 90mm's and i have the 16v car with the driveshafts still on with 100mm inner cvs and obviously cabby still has driveshafts in whats the easiest option swap the flange from old gearbox to new ? do somethin with the driveshafts i dont know if they can be interchanged etc? help! cheers guys
I thought cabbies had 100mm inner cv-c? Are you putting 02a cable change box in your cabby? All mk2 valvers with rod change 020 boxes had 90mm inner cv-s Dont think you can change inner cv-s only as shafts length varies
Sambo, don't you mean 100mm? And that's correct about not just being able to change inner CV joints Just stick with the 90mm CV/flange setup by swapping the 90mm ones onto the 16V box.
I am puttin 020 into my cabby Later cabbys have 100mm mine is early so has 90mm plus it was just a 1.8 carb, maybe if it was gti it would have 100mm? Thanks rich I will do that I reckon
I thought 88 was late enough, but oh well. whats the box code on the cabby, might work alright with the KR which would be the easiest option. Flange swap can be a pain as the springs on them are pretty strong, need some big clamps or a tool to compress them, have a read of brokes site: http://www.brokevw.com
I have had a look at brokes site before , so I have a rough idea of how its done I will post up the box number later where abouts is it located? I don't want to lose too much accelaration/blow weaker box up Also what do I do about the clutch, do I still use a 210mm gti clutch or one for the 1.8 carb motor Thanks, ali
its on a flat plate on the bottom ofthe bellhousing no worrys regarding strength, all 020 boxes are made of the same grade of cheese Justy the ratios that need checking out for suitability. Use a GTI 16v clutch to match the gearbox (check the code on that too to make sure it actually is a 16v box) only other difference is the carby flywheel ignition timing mark will be in the wrong spot, either fit an 8v/16v GTI flywheel or make a new mark on the carby one
okay code on the box of my 16v golf is 2 y 0203 4 and the code on the 1.8 carb golf box 2 6w03096 i am swapping one engine from one car into another, so i have 2 of everything but from different cars if you see what i mean. so i can use gti clutch and flywheel to mate to the box that came off the 1.8 carbed engine? hopefully it can work with the 16v engine succesfully as that would make things a whole lot easier for me!! thanks for the help i really appreciate it
ok 2y is deffo a 16v box, so to use that you want a 16v MK2 clutch kit 6w I cant find on my internet sorces, so I'll have to trawl ETKA to see if i can figure out what it is! edit: hmm cant find 6w anywhere, are you 100% sure thats the code?
aha, looks to be off a montego clicky which is trhe equivilant of a 7a/7d: http://scirocco.org/gears/
it'll fit no bother, but as for the ratios they might not be suitable! the 2nd link above has a calculator on it so you can figure out what rpm you'll be doing at speed, or the other way round
if ive done it right the rpm in 5th gear at 70mph with the carb box is- 3k rpm and the gti box a touch over 3.5k rpm assuming i used the calculator right that is what does this mean?? i dont really understand/no good with numbers
what myou got is a choice between short ratio GTI box, or longer ratio cruiser box this of course assumes the info on the montego site is correct, do you recall what rpm your motor used to do at 70?
gti box ratios - AGB, 2Y (16v Close Ratio) 3.67 3.45 2.12 1.44 1.13 0.91 carb box ratios- 7D, 7A 3.94 3.45 1.94 1.29 0.91 0.71 gti speeds at 7000rpm 1st- 34mph 2nd- 56mph 3rd- 83mph 4th- 106mph 5th- 131mph carb box speeds at 7000rpm 1st- 32mph 2nd- 57mph 3rd- 86mph 4th- 122mph 5th- 157mph so looks like the gti box has way better acceleration is the carb box compatible, what will be wrong if not? i am new to gearboxs , this is my first time looking at ratios , its like a foreign language lol
do u reckon i will really feel much difference? if not ill go with the longer ratio box, changing flanges looks a pain in the ****
The wrong ratios can make or break the feel of a car - but it's really very subjective. If you don't mind doing the work, then try the carb box and if you don't like it then change it (and the friction plate) for the 16V one instead.
