I've found a very small one in a haynes, I guess that'll have to do. Anyone had one of these to bits and got any advice? cheers jake
Presume you're stripping it/rebuilding? They're fairly easy to get apart, unlike an 020 Output shafts off, open casing, diff out etc
Thats the idea really, is got a noisy bearing on the input shaft and I'd rather do that then get a second hand box from a breakers etc. I've got all the tools I could wish for and I've got a bearings specialist within strolling distance of my house which is convenient! And I've got a spare 4speed if it all goes horribly wrong anyways.... nothing ventured and all that, about time I learned summat. Whats going to trip me up?
Depends which end of the casing the noisy bearing is in. If it's the bellhousing end, then just do as above (output shafts off - only the offside one actually), split the casing into two. Then leave all the clusters in the other end of the box, whilst you replace the bearing in the bellhousing end and you're laughing. If it's the other end you'll have to push both shafts out of the end bearings - pain - and work out how to extricate these without pulling the synchros apart. Takes time! Chris
Right, stethoscope at the ready. Its still in the car so at least I can listen. Hope its the clutch end, but I have time and some patience Are the synchros the same as the 020 with those fiddly little sprung detents () or are they beyond help if they come apart? Cheers Chris, I really appreciate the time.
I ran out of patience before I ever got into an 020, but the synchros will surely be the same fiddly things. If one comes apart, you get the please of putting it all back together, but it is achievable. Check the magnet while you're in there - might tell a story. Chris
Cheers! It might be a while before I try this as my g/f is still using the car daily but I'll post when I manage to ruin annother box... thanks once again cheers jake
