if the car is idling it goes into gear as such, but i do not need to press the clutch to put it in gear.

and when it gear, the car doesnt move.

mmmm, maybe what i said above but i think it could be something a bit more techy like a broken clutch plate/pressure plate?

cant just get my head round it at this minute[:$]

Maybe jammed in the position that clutch is engaged.
I am making this up as I go along.

If the engine is running, and you can put it in gear with no clutch and nothing happens (stall, jerk of the car, etc), that tells me the trans input shaft is not spinning.

Be sure the shifter in the car is actually moving the trans into gear. With engine off, grab the lever on the trans, and stick it into a gear, and you should be able to tell if the thing plops into gear. Then go start the engine.

It is possible the clutch friction disk has broken, removing the physical connection between engine and trans.

Check for oil leaks under it. Sometimes when they pop a rivet through the casing they end up like that.

If it is not spinning because of a busted clutch disk, no, it isn't the trans.

If the clutch is OK, and the mainshaft IS spinning, and you can select gears without a clutch, then yep, trans is faulty.

I had the same thing - don't think yours would be the same prob though as the cause of mine was so unlikely - a small metal tab on the clutch release plate had broke off and jammed somewhere in the clutch release mech, so as to prevent the clutch engaging. I stripped down and the clutch plate was fine, still fitted a new clutch though as I'd already bought it [:^(] .
