gonna get my engine oil tonight and thought i would do the gearbox oil to, any recommendations??

also how do you drain the oil, i take it you fill it up by the cap at the top (16v GTi Mk2)

also how do you know how much to put in, sorry for all the questions [8(]

Nooooo!!! do not fill it up by the cap at the top. The cap is for checking your timing etc. If you pour it in there you will coat your clutch in oil. Not good!

You the drain plug is a 17mm allen key at the bottom of the diff.

The filler plug is also a 17mm allen socket on the fifth gear housing on the side of the gearbox. You can also use the speedo cable hole, but they can often get stuck and can turn into a nightmare.

Your gearbox takes just under 2l from dry. Probably about 1.7l in the real world as some oil will stay in the box.

I just use the VW synthetic stuff on mine.

the cap at the top is probably the inspection hole for the TDC mark on the flywheel, DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN THERE AT ALL!!! to fill the 'box there is a plug on the end of the box in the wheel arch that needs a 17mm allen key, or a wheel bolt with two nuts locked together on the thread. To drain it there is a similar sized plug on the bottom of the diff.
People have recomended Redline MTL stuff for the 020 box but I've done two changes with ordinary Valvoline 80 weight oil and its a much better box for it!

2 litres if I'm not much mistaken.
