No idea when the gearbox oil was last changed in my 91 Mk2 16v so better be safe and change it. Can anyone help me by explaining how difficult this is to do at home? How much and what type of oil is best to fill up again? Any special tools needed? All help gratefully received. Mk2 stocker
Jack the car up, undo the the gearbox drain plug on the bottom of the diff. You need a 17mm sump plug socket or a wheel bolt with a nut welded to it. Let the oil drain out. Then remove the filler plug (its looks the same as the drain plug) on the side of the fifth gear housing. Fill until it just starts to dribble out (should be just under 2 litres). Check the manual for the proper grade of oil. Many people go for synthetic oil to aid cold gearchanges. The VW sythetic stuff is good. Edited by: harry_the_cake
Jack the left of the car up quite high when filling and make sure you get 2litres in there, it can be a bit of a pain to fill! I drove mine for a few miles first to warm the oil up so it drains easier, don`t do it with a hangover as the old oil stinks You can fill via the speedo drive but most people drop the speedo gear into the `box so I left it well alone!
Hmmm. Used gearbox oil - one of the most unpleasant smelling substances known to mankind. Evil stuff.
HAHAHA!! I like the smell of engineering coolant that you pour on metal when using a lathe etc. In fact I love the smell of metalwork shops and garages. DARN!!!, I AM WEIRD!!!! Edited by: harry_the_cake
No.. i can live with the metalwork smell.. but gearbox oil is Maybe it's cos i smell it so often from my car and i know it means
If the stink is that bad I might give it a miss and get a garage to do the job for me!!! I'm so squeamish I can't even watch Casualty without feeling rank and I know that's not even real!!
