See the pics. Mine is an early 86 gti 8 valve. I will be removing it soon for a refurb. I have another hanging around and I noticed a lump of metal fitted to the clutch release lever. Should my early one have this on?
    That's my question?
Oh and any top tips on splitting the gearbox from the engine always appreciated

It doesn't really matter, works with or without.

Don't forget to pull off the removable piece of the tin cover between bell housing and engine..

Anyone ever stripped the gearbox down?? Just wondering how hard it is. Hmmm
If its specialist tools it may beat me, otherwise I have the time.
I'm not keen on paying 500 notes to check it over

They're not that nice to strip tbh, compared to say a Ford box.

It's a pain in the arse, not the best design.
