quick question - will an 020 rod change box off a 93 seat tdi fit an 8v mk2 jetta gti? the re-con box which ive had for just over 12 months appears to be knackered as its less than oil tight even after new output seals :(

Needs new diff bearings or output flanges then. The TDi box will fit but the ratios will be very different.

theres hell of a lot of play on passenger side drive flange so i'm guessing the bearing has gone on that side of the diff. can these be changed without splitting the box? I'm guessing no, but wanted to check before going out and getting another 'box.

Nope. Could just be a very worn flange, but you'd be lucky.......

cheers, not normally lucky so can probably rule that one out. Typical that this happens 2 months outside the 12 month guarantee with the supposedly fully re-con box though :(

Take it back to them and give it the "sale of goods act" bit - a box wasn't fully reconditioned if it has died after 14 months.... get Trading Standards onto them if you need to.

just been back on the phone to them - theyre adamant that it had brand new set of german bearings (did say what sort but forgot to write it down!) throughout when they rebuilt it, and that its not unheard of for bearings to fail after 14 months dependant on conditions/use! Either way they don't want to do the work gratis - they want 140 to strip and replace bearings on a loose box or 190 to do the whole job!!

It's not unheard of for bearings to fail after 14 months if they've been fited wrongly - maybe that's what they are basing their experience on. I don't think too many brand new gearboxes were killing bearings after that time.........
