whats the best gearbox to replace a worn 1.8gti box (pb 1990)? does the two litre mk3 8valve fit? or would a passat gearbox fit? as for hydraulic clutch release mechanisms i've no idea which box has which, aprt from that some seat boxes have a cable operated hydraulic clutch. or is this untrue? help woulfd be greatly appreciated trd
Stick with the 8v box, dont go there with cable change the feel is no where near as good as a rod box.
yeah but which ones fit from which cars and what gearbox codes! im not replacing it because i want a hydraulic clutch or cable change mechanism im changing it because its worn!
well most VW 8vs of mk2 age have 020 boxes and there all externaly identical, but are geard differently depending on the engine and size of the car. 16v boxes are sligtly different as they have a bigger input shaft so u need a difrent clutch to match. It depends what you want some people like the 4+E box as the have a bigger fifth gear to curse but then others prefir an 8v gti one. If your happy with the box then just get it reconditioned. last 8v one i done cost 200 and is still going and thats gota 16v (150bhp) attached to it. if you want to play around then pay attention to the ratios, but im no expert on that. 800G's is though. in short any 020 box 8v will physicaly be a straight swap but the drive will be alterd depending on where its come from. 16vs need a biger clutch spline. 02A boxes (ie 2.0 passats and some mk3's and g60s) need a lot of work for no gain
I really miss the 4+E box that my Driver had, because the really low fifth gear ratio was lovely for relaxing drives. I don't like the ratios in my standard 8V GTI so much - difficult to get used to it whining its head off in all gears! But it's down to what you like at the end of the day. Sorry - just a pointless comment that won't help you much
cheers trev! its for my new car, currently sat on the driveway until im 21 (month and a half) 90 spec tornado red (im a sucker for it!) 8valve digi with 84000 and bbs rms for 1100!
