Golf Mk4 1.8T GTI - Cylinder 3 misfiring

    Hi everyone

    Looking to see if anyone may have any suggestions with this problem.

    I drive a Golf Mk4 1.8 GTI (T Reg)

    Whilst in traffic last week my car suddenly started shaking badly and acceleration became a problem, where pulling away was not smooth at all. Lifting the bonnet there was alot of movement, and I suspected a misfire.

    Today I have taken into a local garage who have had a look over. Where they also suspected the common issues of spark plugs or HT leads.

    The following Checks were done:

    Spark plugs, Coils, something else noted as Ext - I guess the electric conncector going to these leads, compressions checks were also done, and a problem with the maf has also been ruled out, as the problem only occurs during acceleration and not in general driving.

    As they were unable to identify the problem they did not charge me which was nice of them, and they informed me of a few things that it could be, I'm struggling to read this guys writing so may mispell things so apologise for that -

    Tric box (module)
    ECU
    Wiring
    Injector

    They told me that it was cyclinder 3 that was misfiring (2nd from right as you look at the cyclinders from the front of the car).

    I also believe a test to get error codes was done, but no error came back (I'm pretty sure thats what he told me)

    Has anyone else had a similar problem with these?

    Does anyone know of other possible issues that could be causing this?

    Any other thought suggestions?

    Hope someone can help.

    Try swapping the coil pack to another cylinder and see if the missfire moves

    As above, it sounds like a coilpack has gone.

    The only problem now is that you have to change all 4 of them.
    I had exactly the same symtoms as you, which started out of the blue.

    I changed the one which i thought was gone, only to have the other follow. :thumbup:
    Its recommended you change all four btw.

    Since i changed them its been fine!

    Aparantly the chap at the garage changed the coil pack. He had got a new one in from VW and the misfire remained in cyclinder 3 (there is a chance that this new one could have been faulty) but im sure he would have swapped them around just to check

    The rule is change one, change all ;)

    If it still doesn't work, then maybe look at the injectors, or the wiring to the colipacks.

    Im still adamant its the coilpacks though!!

    have the plugs/wiring to cylinder3 been checked , also ensure the so called bad pack has been swapped to another cylinder to confirm its the cylinder and not the coil pack. New items can be at fault

    Could well be a bent valve, as I found out yesterday on mine.

    Everything was checked beforehand ( plugs,coilpacks,injectors,wiring,ect), but with the head off and the valve removed, we could clearly see a bent valve.

    Also, check your oil filler cap and the dipstick for mayo, as coolant could be leaking into one of your cylinders, causing a misfire. I've also experienced this on a previous 1.8T cylinder head.

    Dodgy ignition amplifiers on the early AGU engines can also cause misfires.

    If it's an AGU and the misfire doesn't follow the coil pack and spark plugs have already been changed, then I'd bet on it being the ignition amplifier.

    Will the ignition amplifier cause cylinder three nit to work at all there no spark going to it at all it had new plugs new coil pack and compression test too and still nothing it's agu engine

    Potentially yes. Have you checked the wiring to the coil pack? It can crack/break with age and the heat cycles which can also cause the coil pack to not fire.

    Can't see any think wrong with wiring I've even tried swooping coil packs Around and still just cylinder 3 playing up

    The loom sits on top of the cam cover and so gets hot and cools with engine. This can fatigue the wiring loom insulation and cause shorts etc. Swapping the coil and the misfire staying on cylinder 3 proves the coil pack is not to blame and that the case is further up the line. So wiring between coil pack and ignition module or the ignition module itself.

    Yeh that's not a bad ideas wats the best way to replace it or get it fixed or how to deco make sure that the problem Cust I've spent load on this one problem already
