Make sure you set the heater to 'hot' when you fill and run engine.

no need to set the heaters to hot on a MK3, the matrix gets a constant flow of coolant. The way I bleed the system is to run it from cold with the cap off, squeeze all the hoses I can lay my hands on and rev the engine to 2k now & again. As soon as it gets too hot to touch or starts to boil over, replace the cap. Sometimes it takes a good hard rag to get all the air out of the heater matrix though :)
