I have read, in Autocar, that there is to be a 175bhp Golf Mk5 TDI out soon, a sort of 'GTI TDI' (obviously not a 'real' GTI though!)

Anyone know any details about it, i.e. release date? Cheers.

Ive heard about a 180bhp passat diesel. Why isnt a GTITDI not a real GTI? GTI is a Grand tourer, so can be powered by anything IMO.

The Golf GT will be released next year. Utilising either the 1.4 TSI and the 2.0 16v TDI both with 170bhp.

Volkswagen is quite clear in retaining the GTI image for one car, and does not want to dilute it by adding numerous engine types/sizes.

Why supercharge and turbo the 1.4. I know it means theres no lag as the supercharger works from 0rpm. It just seems OTT.

Surely it would have been better just to detune the GTi engine to produce 170bhp.

Or is it VW showing it can make technically advanced engines?

Doesn't it being a 1.4 effect the Tax for it? I presume that it'll have pretty funky emissions too, must be part of the reason.
