Hi all, further to my previous post, i now cant get my golf to start, tryed to tow start it, there is now plenty of diesel in the tank, a new diesel filter and the filter was topped up with fresh diesel, tryed using easy start directly into the intake and this made it start but not run, had to have throttle to the floor just to get the engine to stay running and then after a short while it would just cut out. Im awaiting a friend with a OBDII scanner so i can get it read for faults,

was planning on having it MOT'd today aswell, im gutted.

    Any ideas??

Today i have had the battery hooked up to another car via jump leads for a good length of time, i have removed cleaned and refitted glow plugs they seemd ok, checked fuel is being supplied, and it is definately getting to the filter and to the vacuum pump on the side of the head, so now i am completely lost :S

    UPDATE!!

Only one fault code appeared which was an immobiliser fault which was a little strange as the fault only pops up on the display once in every 6-7 times you turn the ignition on, and the immobiliser light comes on and goes off, there is definately fuel getting to injectors as this has been checked, also the wiring to the injectors has been checked (resistance) all fine, so not a pump fault, and the timing in theory should be fine as not throwing any camshaft sensor faults.......

So im left with the two things it could be which are a fair bit of air in the fuel lines orr i have an immobiliser issue,

AND in reply to Crispy, Its an AJM engine, and got service history upto 92k which states the timing belt was done at 82k, and car has now done 138k,

There is air in your pump. It wants a lot of revs to start so try tow start it with some speed eg.60km/h

I cant due to my towing eye being knackered :( the threads are absolutely screwed and i dont think theres a safe place to hook a tow rope upto without damaging the car

Yeah thats right mate, in tank pump is working spot on, and tandem pump seems to be drawing fuel from the filter so im assuming both are fine

Well it seems if it is my immobiliser at fault i can have it removed from the ECU for 60 so i can get around that issue, just now ensuring that it definately isnt just air in the fuel system before i outlay that sort of cash.

Just been speaking to local VW specialist "Volkswerk" and they have informed me that if the immobiliser light doesnt flash constantly it will not be the immobiliser at fault and i need to check to ensure exhaust isnt blocked and that the turbo is spinning freely, but surely i cant check the turbo unless engine is running? :S im confused

have you read the codes from the dash? this will tell you why the immobiliser is kicking in if it is indeed that. could be reader coil is dead or key match has been lost

There was only one code from the dash which was an immobiliser related code once every 6-7 times the ignition was turned on, and ive been told this is normal by a VW specialist due to the car turning over but not starting, my mate has repaired the towing eye threads so we are going to attempt to tow it off shortly at a good speed and see if that works ill update the thread after this :)

    Thanks for the advice guys

Right towing off didnt work in the slightest, i got fault code 17978 ecu blocked, and also a code from immobiliser saying key not recognised, so my fault is either ecu related or immobiliser related, i now have 2 options, buy another ECU and have a transponder coded to it, OR, send my ECU to stoke and have the immobiliser completely removed, this car is really annoying me now, i generally drive 400 miles per week and since ive bought it ive drove 71miles before it stopped working altogether, but because the seller specifically put on the receipt "spares or repair due to no MOT" i have no comeback so got no choice but to try and fix it quickly before i start getting fined for no Tax

To save me the cost of a key and coding i am either purchasing an immobiliser defeated remapped ECU for 130 or if my original ECU is the right part number he is going to defeat my immobiliser and remap mine for 75 :) happy days hes only 20mile down the road aswell,

as john has said vag-tacho can be used to get the clock pin and SKC

with pre 2001 mk4 golfs with immo2 you can temporary bypass the immobilizer
thought the clocks if you have the SKC

    http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/multi/immo-2-vw-audi.htm

if you could do this it would let you try and start the engine
if you still cant get it to start it's not down to the immobilizer
sounds to me like the engine has a lack of compression
