    Hi chaps,

I`m currently trying to fit a timing belt to the gti, i`ve got the new belt on, all timing marks i.e camshaft, crankshaft are all lined up, the issue i have is that when i go to apply the tension on the pulley the crank moves ever slightly putting the timing marks on camshaft and crank out, am i doing something stuupid?? also i`ve got no lock tools, are they imperitive to the job in hand?
*this is the first time i`ve changed a timing belt btw.

when i do it i put a spanner on camshaft sprocket bolt, turn it anti clockwise till you can get desired twist on belt and check marks, then tighten the tensioner

x2 it helps if most of the tension is on the long stretch of the belt, taking up the loose bit on the curves then should not move any of the pulleys

did it start ok before you did the belt
make sure the marks are all lined up correctly
make sure you havent knocked any vac/breather pipes off around the air box
