Yeah to true, I'd rather have the acceleration. I'm confused as to why mine seems to have 90mm flanges, did the early ones have these ?

Its possible to swap the flanges between boxes. So if its was fitted to your car sometime after being originally built (with 100mm CVJs on it already) the easiest thing to do would be to swap the flanges to 100mm. Does it have witness marks on the case nearby, I believe if you swap 90 to 100 you need to file/grind a little from the case too.

Nah no signs of that, just a bit off subject does anyone know if all mk3 020 gti boxes had the bigger input shafts ? i.e. would have to use a 16v friction plate. Are ratios different ?

I've been holding on to my GTi box which Hotgolf has inspected and has said is in excellent condition.

I could let it go if the price is right I suppose.

What price are solid gearboxes commanding these days?

I'll check the codes and get back to you..........

MK3 GTI box has the larger input shaft just liek the 16v box :)
Personally I'd never pay more than 50 for a box, unless I can actually drive the car myself or i have documented proof the box was rebuilt and/or has an lsd in it. Theres just too many people out there who'll say 'yeah its perfect' when the box is a heap of trash!

I'm a victim of this myself, got a box off ebay only to find after I fitted it the clutch wouldnt release, though my own fault really for not checking the pushrod length before I put it in.

P.S. I'm not saying you arn't trustworthy, just saying 'in general' :p

Realistically, unless its coming from a gearbox reconditioner or their agent (eg some breakers do reconditioned parts as well as direct 'off the car' stuff) then 50 is the target price and you'd be lucky to achieve any more than that, especially in today's economic climate.

Reconditioned? Probably 350-450, backed up by some reasonable guarantee.

Well, I'd be looking for 125 because I know it is a good box hence why I'm holding onto it.

Although I couldn't give any guarantee for obvious reasons.

I'll dig out the code tomorrow (working nights) and get back to you
