hi everyone im 16 and just bought a mk2 golf gti h reg 1.8 8v and hoping to tidy it up a bit give it a good service and then use it as my first car does anyone know any cheap insurance companies as cheapest i have found is 4500 thanks
You will be lucky if you can get cheap insurance lots of factors against you. Price comparison sites can be good but nothing beats a phone call to discuss options
Which is why you should always check insurance cost before buying a car. Especially as a first car. Maybe you can get a black box fitted? Daytime driving and no passengers etc.
For first car, a 90 spec Mk2 1.3 would be a better choice for insurance. You can always do bits to it that are transferable to a GTI later e.g. finding some nice seats, wheels, trim etc.
Buy a cheap car and spend a couple of extra years tarting up the GTi until a specialist insurer will talk to you. Having said that, PM copeidge on here, he has a GTi he started driving at 17 so he might be able to recommend.
Not a bad idea Shaz, Golf project while drivng a Suzuki wagon or similar small engined car. I think insurance prices have increased a fair bit since Copeidge bought his.
To be honest insurers don't like the older cars no matter what model they are Bit crap really as in the case of an enthusiast you're more likely to take the extra care But the main factor he is your age I'm afraid. BBB
I feel sorry for the youngers insuring there cars now. I'm 26, and when I was 17 my first car was a Mk2 Golf 8v GTI. Insurance then was 2000 a year, which I paid monthly, so wasn't that bad. As said above, keep the Mk2 on the side for a while and build it up.
Problem with classic insurance is you usually need to be 25 usually, some will allow it at 21 and even then you usually won't earn NCB from it. Good idea getting a daily run around and welcome to Mk2 ownership/CGTI
And even more since I insured my first Mk2! I got a 1.6 when I was 17, should of really bought a GTi then though because they were so cheap!
Your gunna struggle quite a bit even at 19, I've got a mk1 gti (16v all mods declared. 5ncb, 23 and payed 900 as a daily car. But as said keep it a few years doing it properly, build up your no claims and try later, everything I've spoken to classics they won't insure modified, so keep that on mind.
I got a 1.6 Mk2 when I was 17, and still have it today! It may have lost the 1.6 8v engine at some point along the way though! Best things to do with non-GTI models is to either keep them 100% standard (could add a few easily transferable bits) OR Upgrade them to beyond GTI spec e.g. wide track with ABF But don't build a car that you could go and buy e.g. convert a 1.3/1.6 into 1.8 8v GTI unless the shell is very very very good
Don't care, buying one tomorrow so they can go up as much as they like once I have one in my possession. Just need a fuel pump and little odds and sods and it should be in the car in a couple of weeks (Ben I need parts we'll have a word )
As already stated older cars do cost more because insurance companies see them as more of a "liabilty". I'm 19 and I drive a Polo 6R GTi and a mk4 Supra N/A auto with no NCB, 3 points, and I've only had my licence for two years. To make things worse, I live in Harrow which is supposedly a high risk area. GTi = 1083 all mods and points declared Supra = 3483!! all mods and points declared but registered to my address in Cambridge. I'm aware that the Supra is probably higher risk due to engine size etc. But it worth nowhere near as much as the Polo and the Polo is faster O.o I suggest going for a small engine unique car I.e Seat Arosa 1.4 16v or mk ibiza etc. And as already mentioned; work on the Golf until insurance is reasonable.
