Was in Halfords getting winter stuff, and looked at their 20% off wheels deals. I need some new tyres, and was planning on getting some decent ones. The offers are for alloys with tyres (pics below), ranging from 299 to 340. (I can't afford any more [:^(] ). My car is a '89 Driver, Alpine White, not lowered. Would I be better putting decent tyres on my 14" bottle top alloys, which are a bit tatty, but passable. Or should I chose the new wheels with some unknown tyres and new wheels? And if I chose the wheels, which ones would look better? Or do you think they're all really awful? Edited by: stella
number 4 is ok but personally i think you are better to get a set of second hand wheels, some new decent tyres (eagle f1, toyo etc) and still save money
hmm, toss up between number 3 and number 6 imo, what size would you go for? ive got 15" on my mk2 at the mo, will one day get 16" with really low profiles, i want Compomotive MO 5 Spoke Competition, mmmmmmm in white. mmmmmmmm
i'd agree with dex and get second hand wheels that have slightly worn tyres. you'll spend less than that, and looking at the brands up there, some are questionable...wheels vary in quality a lot.
I think second handers are the way to go too... Don't particularly like any of those above, maybe number 4 but not much...
You really want your car to look like a 4*4? Save your cash and get the suspension lowered with shocks and springs, will make far more difference to the handling of the car. Get the Alloys later! P.S. I've got a set of TSW Alpines at my parents with nearly new P6000's on (15's) MOT fail on one rim if ya interested. Not an add no money involved!
15`s with 195/50`s are far better than the 14`s imho. I`d go for No 4! Ask what tyres are on, you may be able to choose?
I'd do the suspension first and just buy some budget tyres to keep you going until you can afford alloys which is how did it as i didn't fancy the 4x4 look! car looked pretty cool on standard rims lowered anyway But if you do decide to go for alloys i would go for number '4' i've got a similar wheel on my daily ride and they look nice and look a big wheel when fitted as the spokes go right to the edge of the rim. (they look bigger than my mates 17"s as his are more of a dished style) These are 17"s on my car,
Just got back and seen what you all said - thanks. I would like decent second hand wheels, but unsure about buying on <unmentionable auction>. Also, that means picking them from photos, then finding cash, whereas in Halfords I could use my credit card. And a bit more cash disappeared this week, to pay the excess on a new windscreen, after a stone from a lorry smashed it.[:^(] So looks like it's just gonna be some new tyres for the time being. And the comments bout lowering it - which I'm tempted. Do I have to buy new shocks? Or just the springs? And are the 60 ones on <unmentionable auction> any good or just cheap and nasty?
