Paul, thats exactly how mine broke. I can only assume that at some stage the bolt had been subjected to more than normal stresses, either fitted loosely or being stretched somehow.
When i bought my 16v, it had a wheel nut sheared off in the hub. I replaced the bearing, and drilled it out at the same time.
had 2 break on my old metro, not a week after having new front tyres, and one about to let go - metallurgist friend said it had been overtorqued.....airgun suspected at the tyre shop other than this never had one go - had em come loose on track and stopped car before it broke - very obvious they were loose
I broke 1 on saturday doing it up. Luckily i was able to remove the brake disc and remove the remains of it with mole grips
ive broke one before when undoing it, head just sheared straight off, managed to twist it out with some mole grips though
