    hey guys.

i've heard a wee rumor that if you get a heat gun or even a hair dryer on the plastic bumper bits it'll turn them from grey to black again! how true is this as i've got a couple of grey bits on mine. or is it eayer to use some matt black paint i have laying about lol.

    thanks.

Heat gun works a treat! Don't be scared, just be careful when working near painted plastics as it doesn't take much to damage the paint.

Try it, you will be pleasantly surprised :)

I used a heat gun on my MK2. It worked but they don't stay black for long.
Also I had to get them really hot, you are melting the top surface so it turns black. I don't think a hair dryer would get hot enough.

That's a fair point actually Mat, noticed my rear bumper had gone a bit grey again on Sunday :(

Don't know what product to use though as everything seems to stain the white paint on my car. I try not to get any on but it's inevitable unless I mask up the whole car (massive blag)

Heat gun or blowtorch on a low flame, and be very careful if you use a blowtorch. I use a piece of sheet ally as a heat shield to protect nearby paint.

Quite a few vids on YouTube to give you some ideas......it has Worked on mine, but the car lives in a garage out of the sun doesn't really get wet.... Really don't think there is a permenant solution to having to use elbow grease occassionally

Kiwi - black shoe scuff cover, the one in the bottle with sponge applicator. one coat on a bumper will last around 3mths

Is that the one that comes in a bottle with a sponge on the end? Would it not come off on your clothes if you walked past it?

kiwi is what i used on my driver, lasted for ages. if you never clean the car it lasts longer
it wont come off if you brush against it, but if you lean on it you can damage the finish. i had a few jean marks on my bumper from engien work

i did the bonnet grille leaf tray thingy on my gti in 2003 and its still black, though a little scratched in palces from where ive pulled leaves out of it

Another vote for boiled linseed oil  Did it in september, a whole winter of scraping snow and ice off the bumpers later, and they're still looking good. Has lasted a lot longer than the heat gun treatment did.

Although might be worth trying heat gun then linseed oil?

well i was thinking gloss so massive amounts of **** elbow work in sanding the plastic down and all that crap. making it look standard but newer sounds more practical.
