help me understand throttle bodies

are they a replacement for a carb?
i dont really know, and what throttle bodies can be taken off scrap yard cars to improve performance on a 2L 8v engine?

Some good info on there.
Not likely to find ITB's on scrappy motors tho.
Need to be combined with a mappable ECU.
