    Hi All

yesterday the wife went out to the car to start and it failed to start and its not done that before - she tried it again and it started but was a little lumpy and was very smokey out of the exhaust ( Greyish ) it wasnt an oily smoke but more like heavy emissions as you could really smell it and hurts your eyes when you walked to the back

after it was warm turned it off and started it again with no issues i then left it to go cold and started it about 6 hours later and same thing

i have noticed the light on the dash comes on and goes straight off within a second so unsure if that is related to my problem as if the glow plugs are not warming the diesel enough causing the rough running at start up

    Any help would be appreciated

    Many Thanks

best bet is get your codes read, plus read thru the ecu measuring faults see if anything odd comes up. ecu temp sensor is a high suspect on the list though, be sure to buy genuine if you do decide to repalce it.

our pd150 never seems to need the glowplugs, my wife never bothers to wait just cranks it straight over and off it goes

yeah its possible, depends on what codes are logged. ours used to drop into limp due to clogged VNT and log a code for it, but no warnign lights on the dash

If it's a mk4 the plug is above the ash tray just under aircon unit pull the cover forward

It's on the gearbox side of the cylinder head
It points to the bulkhead green or blue plastic

My A4 pd130, never failed to start, but behaved similarly. It was the injectors seals needing doing. Smokey and harsh on start up, and easily stalled. Once it got going it was perfect.

Tbh I didn't do them as I sold the car before it became really bad. But mates have done them and it's apparently not too bad.
