So this morning I jumped into the car for the daily dash to work.
However, that's as far as I got :(

Turn the key, car starts, revs for 2 seconds then cuts out.
Battery is now flat because I tried starting it so many times. But even with a jump from another car it does the same thing. Please Help! [xx(]

1995 Corrado VR6. ODB2 I think. I have VAG-COM so can plug it in tonight and see what pops up.

    Really appreciate any advice.

sounds like the immobiliser - do you have spare key, if so try that.

    I think so too.
Tried the spare key too. Same same :(

The immobiliser setup is the same as the later Mk3 VR6's IIRC.
Unfortunately the Corrado Forum is down at the moment as I am sure I have seen this issue posted before.

If it was the ignition switch, I assume it wouldn't start at all??

when i had a mk3 shell for a vr conversion years ago we used to start it off a screwdriver for a 2 second thrill..

does sound immobiliser, im sure there was a topic on here a few weeks ago about it.

im not personally aware of any way to test it, or how the immob actually works - if its fuel, spark etc...

but sometimes the inductive loop stops working - this can be replaced without having to recode your key

other times the immob controller ecu box is at fault - and you do have to recode your key.

because i dont know how it immobises im not aware of anyway of bypassing the OE immob

If it is an immobiliser fault you can get the ECU re-chipped to defeat the immobiliser

Don't think any Corrado VR6s were 0BD2 from factory but some have been converted.
Vag-com wil throw up a code 'engine start blocked by immobilser' 17*** (can't think of the number right now.)

You can check the immobilser measuring blocks group 10 and see how many keys are coded to the immobilser if it says N/A it's a good chance the immobilser has failed.

One thing you can try which is easy is locate the immobilser module, follow the wiring from the inductive loop to it, and check connections, remove/ replace maybe spray with contact cleaner and try that.

Searched through the Forum and found a whole range of possibilities.
From fuel pump relays, ECU Temp sender to Transponders.

I think it is the reader coil in the ignition barrel. It reads the transponder chip in the key when you turn on the ignition, then sends a signal to the ECU.

I'll link up the VAGCOM tonight and pull off the steering column plastics and have a butchers.

Anyone got the part number for the reader coil? And where it connected to under the dash so I can clean the contacts.
From memory, there's just one big fat cable-tied loom in there that's difficult to trace.

Thanks GVK and Bobby for the replies so far.

Took the steering column cover off last night and fiddled about a bit (didn't actually do or find anything). Hey presto, car started fine there and then. Took her for a 80 mile drive to charge the battery.
Started fine this morning and 3 more times today. Still with the cover off the steering column.

    Plugged in VAG-COM tonight.

Fault: Engine Start Blocked by Immobiliser

Just as GVK said. Car is ODB1 by the way, all the later ones are.

So it is almost certainly the Reader Coil. Must order one pronto.

    Cheers for the help folks.

Don't think so. The ring just reads the chip in the key and send the signal to the box for authorisation.

no the ring isnt coded to anything, but the transponder box I think has the key codes within it so you can just swap that over for another.
