ok im off to buy a new head unit this afternoon but im just trying to work out how to get the old one out!

Its just the standard one that comes with the Mk3 GTI as it has the VW sign on the tape flap bit.

On my old peugeot one you could just use the end of a teaspoon. But on this one i can't see any slots or anything.

    Ideas please people.........

    cheers

usually theres metal key type objects to withdraw the unit. if you aint got these I would take off the headunit, then the surround and try to lever it out using a small flat head screwdriver ! be careful though [|)]

If its a sony there will probably be two slot at the top on either side, they're only about 1mm thick so your not going to get a screwdriver in. You can cut a piece of metal to size if you've got some handy though.

    hahaha made a BIG mistake [:s] .
I took off the face plate then started on the plastic surround so i could get behind it to lift the metal clip things so it would come out. OH DEAR! the second the surround came off *WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO* the most deafening noise coming from the headunit! its f**king alarmed!

So i took it out wrapped it in 3 blankets and put it in the garage. Just a bit worried its dead now. Obviously the battery will die v.soon but i hope it still works.

The old man is ringing a friend at a hartwell VW garage today to ask.

!NOT THE WAY TO REMOVE A HEADUNIT!

Mate I did the same thing - bloody noisy init, had everyone walking along the street lookinmg at me as if I was knicking it.. I ended up just pulling the battery off. I was deaf for about 3 days!!!!

I think there should be a warning on them - I wonder if you could sue them?

just a quick update in case anyone else gets this problem.

Found out that the alarm lasts 3 days. There is a switch inside the main casing that you can turn it off with. The stereo will still work fine and next time you put it in the car the alarm will recharge so if anyone like me is daft enough to dismantle it it will go off for another 3 days!
