iam so lost with insurance.. i just dont understand it. can someone help me plz. i want to buy a mk3 golf as a first car. i will be 17 when i start to drive and whant to insure the golf. i have been told that TPTF is my best bet because iam short on funds. BUT i it better to insure the car under my name or my dads?
my parents made me insure my car under my name, by the time i got to 21 i had 4 years NCB, which meant i could insure virtually n e thing i wanted , got meself a E36 325i coupe and wrapped it round a tree, lost 2NCB. my bro on the other hand got insurance under rents names, he can't get n e other car till his much older as the lack of NCB is stopping him... so even though i f@@ked up i can still afford to insure a Mk2 16v gti whereas a me bro can't. However it cost me more to get here. TPFT is great if the car aint worth much... i made a massive mistake insuring the BMW TPFT, i have lost everything....
Insure the car in your name. It may be more expensive to start with, but you will then start to build up no claims bonus (so long as you don't claim!), which will mean your Insurance will start to get cheaper in years to come (bear in mind even one years NCB is a discount of 35%, which makes quite a difference). TPFT is usually more economic for young drivers unless you spend a hell of a lot on your first car (which isn't really a good idea as most first cars get bumped at some point). When considering whether to go Comprehensive or TPFT, remember there will be a hefty excess on any claim on a Comp policy, and also the loss of any NCB will make future year's cover even more expensive.
No such thing, but there is a 1.4. Nice first car, just try and find one with PAS, as the Mk3 is quite heavy without.
mk2 1.3, the mk3 was a 1.4. iirc it's cheaper to insure the mk3 over the mk2, don't know the performance differences tho. i'm sure someone on here will be able to help out with that
Smallest MK3 engine was 1.4. A 1.3 in a lardy MK3? how slooow can you go Always best to insure it under your own name, the quicker you can build up your no claims the better. If you still want something reasonably quick however, think about buying something French like an AX or a 106, even the small engined models go pretty quick and handle well. The smaller engines will save youmoney road tax and insurance wise. Plus you wont give a t055 if you wrap it round a tree My girlfriend has a 1.4 AX, and it feels more 'nippy' than my MK2 1.6 driver, but the MK2 is so much smoother and has a bit more grunt for motorway driving. I'd go on the parents insurance for he first year or two cos if experience is anything to go by then you'll most likely have an accident in that period.
Insure in your name mate, how about a 1.9 diesel. They are not bad speed wise and cheap to run and insure! My brother has one and he has no NCB! If you go on your parents insurance and have an accident they arn't going to be best pleased. stress you can probably do without!! Edited by: gti3_20
my first 2 years as a driver saw me payin 1200, and 900 under my rents insurance on my 1.9 diesel.... I'm now 21, and fully comp on my own at 1350!!!!! Wish i'd gone on my own straight away, as i;d now have 2 yrs NCB instead of none!!!! Go it on your own, and you'll gain mega advantages in 2 years!
the first year your better off going under someone elses name, as my fiesta 1.1 fiesta was 2500 fully comp (3000 tpft) under my name. then after a year or so go under your own name. i dont know whether itll be possible to get insurance on a 1.4 as when i tried to get private insurance on my escort (1.3) they wanted about 4,500 a year for it .
No it doesn't . 1.6 Driver = 75bhp 1.4 AX = 80 bhp (twin carbs!) As for insurance. TPFT is only useful for cars worth under a grand. Otherwise you should go for fully comp. Cheers, Drew. Edited by: drew
Sorry mate it isn't an AX GT, its a TZS! It only has a single carb unless the French have put the other one somewhere else Edit: From what I could find out, it'll be 66bhp, not bad for a car that weighs as much as a shopping trolley Edited by: rubjonny
I think its the AX equivilant of the GL, seems to have nicer velour seats and doorcards, electric windows, sunroof, GT clocks with rev counter, central locking, digital clock (wow! ) and chunky rubbing strips. Probably other stuff too, but I'm not really a Citroen man I know that they have the TZS spec on lower engined models too. BTW the car is a G reg, 1989 so a MK1. Edited by: rubjonny
well, i went under me mums name for one year then took out me own when i bought me first car a mk3 1.4, but insurance group 6 i was paying 900 tpft! so my only advie is go and buy something small and little, cause in a few years you can have loads of better stuff!! doesnt matter what ya mates have got, its what you will have in the future that counts!! i hate to say this, but my wife bought a seat ibiza 1.3, cheap to buy, cheap to insure on insurance group 3 and cheap to tax, oh yeh and cheap to run! i still hate it though
If at all possible get your OWN insurance!! For all the reasons already stated above!! Just make sure you shop around, even tell the companies prices you've had so they can try and beat em!! Worked for me and i'm with Brentacre!!
