Built a sound trigger sometime ago and seeing a few of you guys are into your cameras i thought you might like to see the results. These are the first shots with it, needs a bit more work but you get the idea.
Brilliant :-) .... would you care to elaborate on the shutter release... sounds interesting! Is it a camera release or is it a flash trigger?
Thanks, its basically a microphone connected to a box of tricks and that is connected to the flash. You need to set the camera set to bulb so you can hold the shutter open, then the fun bit the room needs to be total dark no light in it at all. So you have to set the shot up first then when you smash the glass burst the ballon etc the sound it makes gets picked up by the mic and triggers the flash which is what gives you your exposure.
Think this was the one i made. http://www.diyphotography.net/universal_sound_and_optical_slave_flash_trigger Its amazing when you get it working you can clap your hands together and the flash fires before you hear the clap. Also if you turn the flash down the exposure is faster so in an idea world 2 or more flashes turned down would be better. If i remember right you can get the exposure down to 1/64000
Set camera to M mode and turn the shutter speed right down you should get to 30 seconds then "bulb" (on Nikon) just means you can hold the shutter open for as long as you hold the shutter release down. Its better to have 2 people to do the shots one gets set to smash something the other to work the camera.
I think at least one of you lot is clever enough to build this kit, and put up for sale in the CGTI Entrepreneurs section. Then I could buy one and get on with doing some of those great photos. So come along - get building!
Mine looks like the one in the black box. http://www.diyphotography.net/universal_sound_and_optical_slave_flash_trigger scroll down the page.
I don't have a delay built into mine and i don't think you need it. To get the ballon half burst the mic needs to be very close if not touching it, in the orange ballon pic we had the mic about 10mm from the ballon (behind the hand). Then for pictures like the first one just move the mic back, i think it was about 2.5 meters away for that one.
