Astopic above!I am wondering why my former golf gti mk1 and mk2 manual sunroof never have any problem for many years and my mk3 vr6 giving me problem lately not working after checking found out one of the linkage broken and the spare is very costly and need to order from germany.

I'd never had a problem with mine until last week when all three buttons decided to be 'open' buttons, meaning I had to close it manually.

Mysteriously, it was fine the next day (and since), and the passenger window that hadn't worked for months is now perfect...

How reliable? All of us here in America got letters in the mail, giving the option to opt out of a class action law suit about it. For it leaking that is. It included a new PROFESSIONAL maintenance plan of shoving a wire in the drain holes ever 30k miles

Mine works fine and I have the "everything shuts when I lock the car" feature. Although I have come to it a few times and the sun roof has completely opened on it's own [xx(] haha

My sunroof on mk3 gti won't open due to cable connection on nearside being snapped. had to close it manually.Motor works but won't open unless wound back manually. Then when you close it it will only close on one side. trial and error and eventually youy get it closed properly.

It is costly to repair/renew though - a replacement you can get for around 50 but you need to replace roof lining and most specialists want TWO DAYS LABOUR to take it out and put it back together again.around 200+. If yours is closed properly leave it!

You do not need to replace the headling at all...someone is spinning you a line...! [:s]

I removed one from a Mk3 the other day in about half an hour. Dropping the headlining is simply a job of removing some trim pieces (A, B, and C-pillars), the grab handles, and sunvisors.

Headlining then can be removed very easily with a second pair of hands. Full sunroof mech. can then be removed in about 5 minutes; it`s only two screws and a wriggle to detach the motor, pull of the four drain pipes at each corner, then 9 bolts to drop the mech. complete.

Refitting is reversal of removal and all that. Whole job shouldn`t take more than an hour, even if you`ve never done it before.

Totally agree Stu although I think it may take a little longer if never done before. Will be much easier with two pairs of hands and most important bit is being carefull not to crease the headlining.
