I need to vag com my car but it doesn't seem to have the 16pin diagnostic connector anywhere. Is there another type of connector for earlier cars?

My engine is an OBD1 with coilpack and I think its quite an early one, 1994 or 1995.

If I got the connector (Is it a DL16?) how would I wire it in?

    Thanks.

I've got a connector already in mine, but it uses two small square connectors. I've got a connector that converts this into 16 pin OBD2 port which came with the car.

Can;t get my code reader to work on it though.

This is the convertor cable i have:

ive seen a topic on mk2 vr6 about plumbing in a 16pin socket.

i am in much the same hole as you are, but fortunately the car is running fine, this is the topic i have bookmarked, hope it is of some use.

seems simple enough, find a polo or summat down the scrappy, cut out the socket and some connected loom and go from there

this type of connection is the 2x2 type I have the same connection in my 94 16v corrado. the ports are located under the gearstick surround so maybe similar on the golf. you will have trouble connecting to the engine module on vagcom if using a usb/serial port converter cable (from ebay)

sorry I should have given more detail. Mine did work (sort of) with the correct drivers but it could only get into the abs module not engine. Tried it on several laptops and settings even the guy I bought the cable off could not get it to work this is only with the 2x2 connector tho I think normal obd2 are fine.

I am connected now with a superior cable (not ross tech).

Thanks for the replies. So if it was a 2x2 connector could you simply cut that off and re attach the wires to a 16 pin plug? My vag com lead is for the 16 pin one.

I'll see if I can get to the scrapy in the morning and get 16 pin plug with a decent length of wire on it.

my thoughts are yes thats exactly what you can do G60KG casts doubt on my assumtion though. either way hopefully you should find the white/grey wire conencts to a jumper block in the fusebox area somewhere, so you can simply disconnect this and plug it into the 16pin loom without having to chop anythign on your loom.

If you can find a later MK3 and feel like putting a bit of effort in, you could grab the 16pin loom and remove it from the car all in 1 piece without chopping, for a plug & play connection (except the red/white, this you'll need to splice into the ciggy lighter socket)

The 16pin plug loom runs up behind the dash around the clocks, there a 2 pin connector for the yellow and grey wires which fits into a diagnostic jumper block, usually this block is clipped to the top of the fusebox. then you have an earth which is usually on a ring terminal to the chassis somewhere, and finally the red/white wire which is spliced into the ciggy lighter wire.

if its any help i could get a pic of the loom i removed from a 96cl?

if you cant be bothered with all that then any later model car should have the plug, as you say chop off a decent length and ya good to go.

If you do have the 2x2 connector then you use an adaptor cable that attaches to your 16 pin one. Its just the the bright blue one off ebay did not like my 2x2 connection even though the seller of the cable tried several cables and laptops. It maybe a different story if you use an actual serial cable instead of a usb one pretending to be a serial.

I've finished early so i'm off to get a port now. I'm off to VW Audi Used Spares in Middleton, he wants 5 for it which will do me.

    Edit:

He couldn't change a tenner so I got it for 1.87 worth of shrapnel from my wallet:thumbup:

OK I've got the port but its from a mk4 and the wiring on it is:

    Pin 1 - Black/Blue
    Pin 4 - Brown
    Pin 5 - Brown
    Pin 6 - Orange/Black
    Pin 7 - Grey/White
    Pin 13 - White/Red
    Pin 14 - Orange/Black
    Pin 16 - Red/White

Looking at the wiring diagram I think first I need to change it so its like this:

    Pin 5 - Brown
    Pin 7 - Grey/White
    Pin 15 - Yellow
    Pin 16 - Red/White

5 and 16 are easy but I can see no 'TV14 - Self Diagnosis Wiring Junction' in my car, which I think has just fooked me up totally. I'm assuming thats the black thing on the picture below:

are thOK, I had another look and found a grey/white wire but when I followed it it went to the headlight switch.

Then I found these 2 on this connector, yellow and grey/white:

I'm hoping these are the wires from 'J' on Jonnys first wiring diagram he posted, does anyone know and also can I connect these to the corresponding wires on my 16pin plug without using the 'wiring junction'?

yeah you dont have to use the junction block, it just makes your life easier!
no issues soldering the car diagnostic wires direct into the port. oh and dont worry about the yellow wire, thats for abs or airbags or something, the only wire you need to worry about is the grey/white from the ecu :)

Can I test its the right wire first, or do you know it is from the pic?

Maybe undo the ECU plug and test it for continuity with the right pin on the ECU? Any idea which pin it goes to on the ECU? I cant see the grey/white wire at the ecu because there are so many wires so tightly wrapped.

I find it amazing that all that information can travel down a single wire.

yeah testing it would be a good idea thinking about it
the wiring pin for ecu diagnostics on the VR is pin 43 :)
