Hi The heat shield on the exhaust downpipe is old & rusty and has been getting on my nerves for ages. Rev up the car - wrrp - followed by rattle rattle Also I can't tell whether its pinking or rattling.. Anyway I spotted in this month's Retro Cars an ad featuring exhaust insulation wrap for keep the manifold insulated and protecting things from heat. What I'm thinking of doing is removing the original heatshield and then wrapping the downpipe in this stuff. Can anyone think of anyone probs or dangers doing this?
Do it. Heard it will rot the downpipe quicker though (holds water next to the exhaust). But saying that the heat will dry it out, so swings and roundabouts really.
If you put the wrap on properly it should be damn near water tight anyway. I'd get a new heat shield as well as wrapping the exhaust if its being noisy. You can get Cooltek wrap from Proven Products (http://www.proven-products.co.uk/). You'll need the heat proof ties too. The wrap will benefit noise, under bonnet temperature and exhuast gas flow (a bit more power).
Exhaust wrap really does help to keep under bonnet temps down. If ya worried about rust (which might take years!) then paint it first.
Looking at the Proven Products site it says the wraps not for cast iron stuff. Manifold & downpipe are aluminum aren't they?
The exhaust manifold is cast iron. But you won't be lagging that so...... I do hope your joking. Downpipe is mild steel.
So the mainfolds cast iron & the down pipes mild steel What would happen then if they were both aluminium?
That was my assumption up till fairly recently. Sadly proven wrong by another person with rotted exhaust.
and when it does rot you can throw it in the bin and buy the stainless item that you should have forked out for in the first place
i agree put a stainless one on, there an ass to change. be carefull though there are differant grades of stainless if they wont tell you the grade its sh*t stuff that still goes rusty.
