Bit of a broad question I know and I have been looking at images etc. on-line but thought maybe you lot may have some lesser known tell tales that'd help. Plot is the GTiE engine you've maybe seen in another thread is stamped as an EV 8v and everything I can see about it confirms that (1.8 on the reverse for example), however the original VW block number has been over written by GTiE. This isn't unusal and infact seems to have been the norm for them when adding the conversion type details, I'm guessing space was tight and it allowed them to squeeze everything on. The accompanying head is dated Dec '86, and while the engine number is partially illegible what is there dates it to Oct '86... There's other details but in combination I'm content the block and head (has the vacuum pipe for shrouded Kjet injectors for example) have been a pair from factory. Problem is the (82.5mm Mahle forged) pistons with standard rods / 86.4mm stroke (correct to the conversion) give a capacity of 1847cc when it should be 83.0mm pistons giving 1869cc hence the RE1900 name. There was a RE1850 conversion done to the 1600cc EG which used the 82.5's but that had a forged crank (mines cast as is correct to the RE1900) and it's head had 32.5/38.5 exhaust/inlets whereas the RE1900 was 35/40, once again which mine has. So if your still with me it looks like I've an RE1900 in every detail such as the correct base engine, head work etc. just with slightly lesser piston size / cc Of course there's always the unknown, GTiE maybe changed the spec. or offered this as a conversion or it was specially ordered, any number of reasons. Finally to the question... how to definitively tell an EV block over an EG / other block?
Run the various numbers through Google and it's 100% a base block casting that was used to create EV's (amongst several others inc. the DX for example).
