Ignition on 2.0l 9a

Hey folks, just been talking to H+H about an electronic ignition setup for my 9a on 45's, basically you send them your distributer and you get a coilpack and the reworked distributer back with all the necessary wiring..

The ignition curve can be altered to your engine spec, which sounds promicing too, all for 205 all in. Just tell them what carbs your running and the cams your running and they sort it all for you..

Must be better than the standard ignition??.. Peoples opinions please?

Where would the std. Ecu fit into this equation? - Would it still be used?

Lost with this one. Golf K-jet 16vs use an ignition ECU. The only way to alter timing maps this would be to change the calibration parameters on the eprom.
I do not understand why you would have to send your distributer to them and get a coil pack? I would have thought to use a coil pack you would need a 36-1 or a 60-2 trigger.

    Reply from H+h:

    Hi Henry

if the engine has facility for a distributor, we can supply a fully electronic ignition setup (distributor, coil & wiring) with the correct advance curve to suit the engine spec, to carry this out we will need the distributor or the Bosch OE number from the body of the distributor. The total cost of this conversion will be 205.00 inc vat & carriage

If you need any further information please ask.

    Kind Regards

You'll have to clarify things for me too. You'd never find a car with both a coilpack and a distributor! WTF are they aiming to send back?

This is what im trying to clarify myself??!

Reading it again, says coil, not coilpack.. my mistake, i dont understand how it will alter the curve if its the ECU that working it out? - and the ECU is not being changed?

All I can think is that they offer a service to modify a 'traditional' distributor, ie one which has mechanical and vacuum advance features. You can modify the weights to alter the advance effect of the mechanical bit (speed related) and do something to modify the vac (load related) bit.

Are they VW specialist or not? I am amazed if they have offered to modify a 16V distributor. It is possible to fit a 1.3 small block dizzy in the place (might need different adapter, etc) and they could modify this to give a more appropriate advance curve, etc.

Just use the Emerald ignition only setup using the OE distributor, You will also need an Air temp sensor and a Webber TPS, The loom will take an evening to make, Two minutes to fit and will be ideal for ITB's at a later date all for 450

How much of an improvment over the origional setup with a standalone should i expect?

From standard to mapped ignition i had 45bhp but thats in a Race engine with hight compression and a shed load of other bits done.

There's a difference between adding mapped ingition to enable correct timing to be done, or simply as an upgrade. So it depends what you're starting from, how much gain you can make.

i am using the h +h ignition system u describe above and is for use with engines which dont have an the ecu and wiring loom for like i never had ie still had the old 8v kjet loom. all they asked for is the distributor number, cams and webers i was using so they could set up the advance curve inside their distributor but never asked me to send the origional distributor too them.

i think what they do is change the distributor inners for the old spring type but add an electronic ignition adapter. the dizzy has a spark amplifier on the outside and from there the wiring goes directly to the dry coilpack which is wired directly from your ignition barrel.

i took the live from the old amplifier and it works fine but thinking of taking it straight from the barrel.

the ignition gives a smooth curve with 38 deg of advance set at 8 deg at about 900-1000rpm

didnt make that much difference to the power just made it much smoother and easier to drive. need to dyno run the car yet so not quite setup yet.

ill take some pics tomorro for you if its not raining

this sounds very similar to the msd setup we use here in the states

    Jesus!

My engine is very close to race spec: Dave crissel head work, Ti springs/retainers, balanced lightened bottom end, schrick cams, decked block and head, twin 45's

Obviously the ignition is the weakest link by a long way..

I have been looking into OMEX umungst others,

How has everyone dealt with the trigger wheel? how have they secured it etc.

For an inexpensive solution use Megajolt. You can use your dizzy as a trigger.

i use the msd6al with the fixed curved timing computer with the stock 3a dizzy.be glad to tell you more if you like to hear about it.i also use the factory coil.

    ignition

yes very interested as more info please. did u wire it to the origional spark amplifier or straiht from the ignition switch, has it made alot of difference, can u change the curve on the computer thingy to achieve different power brackets?

ABF's use trigger wheels dont they?, would that mean that I could run an ABF trigger wheel on my 9a with the standard sensor as well?

have a look at this might be worth a try i emailed them today and they said they could do a ecu kit for under 228+vat

    http://www.enginemanagement.co.uk/

    he said

    Hi,

If your on Carbs then you need the ignition only ECU.

This will run off the std crank trigger (if still fitted). You'll need a TPS sensor - Webcon make one that fits directly onto the DCOE carbs.

The price for the ECU is 228 + Vat
