Recently I have noticed a big increase in the fuel consumption of my MK3 gti. I used to get about 320 to 340 miles to the tank, this gave a consumption around the 38 to 41mpg mark on a run. Now I am getting about 260 miles to the tank under the same driving conditions.
A few weeks ago I had the ICV off to clean it due to erratic idling. While I had the hoses and the ICV off the plenum I noticed that the plenum was very dirty with what looked like oil from the crank case breather. I sprayed carb/injector cleaner around the plenum and hoses to clean them up as far as I could.
All of this really helped the erratic tick over. I was wondering if this could somehow be the cause of the increased consumption. Maybe dirt migrating to one or more of the injectors and causing it to stick open. As once or twice I have noticed a very strong rich mixture smell in the car. What I want to know is the best way to check and clean the injectors if this is the problem or any other sugestion to a possible cause.
Plugs dizy cap and arm were changed about 3000 miles ago.

Thanks for any light you can shead on this.

    Jester.

Check all the vacuum lines - you may have a leak leading to increased fuel consumption.
Another thing is the lambda sensor. Not sure if yours will have one. Basically, it "sniffs" the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas & tells the ECU to richen or lean out the mixture. If it's knackered it will run rich all the time.

Run some injector cleaner thro' the petrol to loosen up any dirt in th fuel lines & injectors.

The smell of fuel maybe a perished pipe or connection.
Check the fuel rail & pressure regulator.

    Hope this helps.

I was at jabba and they advised me not to get a patent one, so I bought a VAG one for mine ( a G60) and cost 150 notes.
