My 1990 16V has developed an intermittent fault.

Sometimes it will start on the first turn of the key, then other times the fuel pump primes itself but the starter motor doesn't turn at all - it just clicks once.
If i keep trying it will sometimes just start about 5 minutes later.

Is this a problem with the whole motor or just the solenoid? If so can the solenoid be replaced seperatley?

Its one of those annoying faults which the garage cannot replicate Arrghh!! [:x]

I would check your battery voltage and check all wires onto the starter, they normally click when the battery doesnt have enough power to spin it.

When my battery was on its way out it clicked loads of times, if it just clicks once maybe you have a bad connection?????

Are you sure its something to do with the electrics???

I had a problem like this on my mk2 driver, and after getting it checked in about ten places i found that it was actually the distributor cap that had water in it!!!

I was very shocked, all they did was cleaned it out and spray some wd40 in it and the car starts everytime now!!
Let me know how it goes
