    According to Wikipedia - a highly reliable source - VW upgraded the TDi engine from 90 bhp to 110 bhp in 1996. Mine is a late 1997 which would suggest that it's 110 bhp, which sounds rather a lot. However, it would explain the ridiculous insurance group (IG 9).

    How can I confirm this?

    To answer my own question:

    AHU = 66 kW = 90 PS
    AFN = 81 kW = 110 PS

    My car = AHU

    Balls.

    Looks like it's the same engine as a Mk4 GT TDi, but how did it make its way into Mk3s?!?
