Yes, you can get them cheap enough at vw and they ussualy go for silly money ebay.

Makes the gear change much nicer! Coupled with fresh bushes on the selector its a lovely change [:D]

You'd have to win the auction for 6 to make it cheaper than going to VW to buy a new one

Yep definatly. I got mine new from VW about a month ago and it was about 12.

Wasn't too sure whether i would notice the difference but it really does feel a lot smoother. Fitted mine in the stealership car park in about 30 seconds.

unless you follow Haynes manual advice of putting it up on ramps, removing exhaust, heat shield and dropping gear linkage down :lol::lol:

what part do I ask for at VW? is this a standard mk2 part or would it be a mk3 part I need to do this mod. I did read on a thread about grinding part of the weight off to allow it to fit around the mk2 transmission but I assume this is not part of a 30 second job so if I ask for the right part then no grinding needed...

    cheers

    Pretty sure the part number is 1H0 711 183, and they're off a mk3.

Didn't have to grind anything away for mine :)

Tis a good mod, makes the gearshift feel a bit more civilised.

    I got mine from a Mk3 down the scrappy for 3 ;)

I'd advise against buying from that seller as he's screwed me in the past.. unfortunatly I only found this out after I'd left positive feedback having not checked the item properly [><]

I have the adjustable TSR linkage on my mk1 but would it be hard to add a weight to it & which piece would use it?

I had to grind mine because I have a short shift and in 5th gear the shift rod got in the way. Didn't need much grinding though.
Weighted rod is worth it cos its cheap and effective.

found one in a scrapper and fitted it in the car park, not down to 30 seconds levels of expertise but less than 5 mins certainly!!

gear change defo smoother, second still has a notch to it though but you can hardly complain for a fiver (a bit steep if you ask me) and 5 minutes

No. I think the Mk1 uses a different set of external rods. I'll check my Mk1 & 2 but I think the answer is NO

I have had in mind welding what (I think) are longer Mk1 rods to Mk3 shift weight though
