Sorted out the rest of the MK2 today for an MOT, plan is that I can just get in it and go to the center if a short notice cancellation happens to pop up. No big deal one doesn't, car's booked in for early August regardless. Looking back over the old MOTs since the car was returned to the road in Sept. '22 it was a surprise to find its only done 1000 miles in those 22 months... seems like much more. Nothing exciting found but had previously substituted in a manually adjustable clutch cable, which has turned out to need some slack taken up. Wasn't much but noticible and not sure if that's to be expected at that mileage? Wonder is it just coincidence or is the new counterweight having an influence? Did the CO as well, had drifted a little since the last test but that always happens so now back to sitting at 1.8. Went for a blast later in the evening, pity the roads aren't always so empty. Anyone recognise the view?
Surprised some of you God fearing Irishmen haven't chipped in, a better piccie below. ... and this first's probably going to be a giveaway. (Hope you can read the detail from the image, I know there's others on here like their history.)
I'd even look good with that background! For all you heathens... it's Slemish Mountain in the background, the first place St. Patrick lived when he was brought to Ireland.
Another ticket this AM for 12 months... sods law it started to rain the instant I went out to the garage. Redid the CO after the earlier post and brought it down to 1.5, it's become a bit of a challenge to see if I can match whatever the test center machine comes in at, so wasn't a kick in the arse off their 1.390... good to see the old Gunson's still got it's mojo. The now traditional celebratory photo.
I’m not a fan of white cars in general, although bought a few in the past, but yours looks really nice congrats on the pass!
Did the Citigo this evening, that was thankfully the last of 5x cars I've MOT'd in the past week or two... don't know why it does, there's no reason for it and it's daft, but I always get a bit nervy taking them through.
This was done in the same vein as fitting the tacho. under the bonnet (helps doing the CO on the Gunson)... this time it solves the irritation of having to go get the keys / start the car to check the interior gauge or hoke out the multimeter instead, now I just have to press a button if I'm passing. Yes, the cars are on battery conditioners over the winter, but in between times that's not always the case. No new holes etc., and only existing fixings used (think they're for the PAS bottle on Diesels / G60's?), the vacant slam panel one that's beside the bonnet buffer was handily the exact diameter to take an off the shelf sized momentary button. The contours of the washer bottle (again to allow for the G60 bottle?) I think lends itself to something being there. Bracket's the shape it is to keep everything below the bonnet line / fouling when it's shut. Button is fused on the battery side, so nothing's live 'till it's pressed / off again when released. Gauge is a cheapy, didn't want to risk a VDO, but don't see it getting too much abuse where it is all the same. Checked its various readings against the multimeter and it's exactly spot on.
That is the larger of the 2x recommended battery sizes for the MK2, sits out over the lip of the chassis leg... I inherited the cover years ago with the MK1. Part number is 281 915 411F, date marked 1985. The battery beneath it in the image is a UK code 075 (L.242mm / H.175mm / W.175mm), cover's a mm or so outside of that so as to clip over it. The smaller recommended battery option is UK code 063 (L.207mm / H.175mm / W.175mm), the cover might still snap on widthwise, but it'll have a 35mm overhang lengthwise. Edit: Looks like UK code 012 fits the MK2 also - L.207mm / H.190mm / W.175mm, but again not long enough for this particular cover. (Those are VARTA L/H/W measurements - others may vary slightly)
7Zap gives 191915411 as another option, Google threw the second link up... says it's 210mm x 175mm https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/golf/go/1991-110/9/915-212010/#4 https://www.nkautomotive.com/gb/product/59658/genuine-vw-battery-cover-191915411.html
281915411F seems to also be a Porsche 924/944 item... and if you look around, about a third of the price new that some sellers of the VW one seem to think they're worth.
Your car? Somerset registration. One of my mates' Dad had one of those as a company car and my mate was insured to drive it. We were only 18 jammy b....
Herluin Garages, Weston-Super-Mare, so I believe you're right... Have a thread of sorts in the members only section, stems back to when I joined the forum, should really get @rubjonny to 'declassify' it into the general section, must be confusing when I mention the 205 elsewhere and folk wonder what I'm on about! https://www.clubgti.com/forums/index.php?threads/jacquot-peugeot-205-gti.292508/
Originally had the outside temperature gauge wired in from the get go along with all the others, but some days it worked, and some days it didn't. Since the car was finally back on the road and running faultlessly, didn't want to tempt fate and risk delving under the dash upsetting anything, so let it slide. Picking up a rev. counter from the same VDO range recently and it got me looking at the temperamental ambient gauge again. Turned out it was the sender body had a weak earth, the bracket's intended to do that, but mustn't have been up to the job. Booster wire later and working perfectly, even matches the MFA's reading. The rev. counter'll be for the MK1's engine bay, in the same way that the MK2 has it's own when using the Gunson. Runs off the coil or the 'W' spade on an alternator, temporarily had it running off the MK2's. There's a little screw that allows you to trim it to match the engine. Strictly speaking it's probably a diesel tacho as it only goes up to 6K, but since I want it for doing the CO it's immaterial.
