I've got an 88 Gti 16v with a shagged cylinder head and knackered 2nd gear syncromesh. I've just laid my hands on a 16v Jetta warts and all which i'm going to use as a donor car for my golf. I've hear that Jetta boxes are sought after as they have better ratios than the Golf. Does anyone know if this is true and what effects it will have. Also is it a straight sw*p or will I need the clutch as well?
As far as I know they are the same as golf bits. Check the code on the bottom of the gearbox, I bet you'll see "2Y", same as the golf. Yeah, they should be a straight swap.
only reason i'd have thought jetta boxes being sought after is that probably less likely to have been thrashed than a golf.
Cheers for the info, makes the sw*p a bit less of a worry. Looking forwards to having second gear again!
