Pull the head, check valves and pistons. If pistons are ok but multiple bent valves you may be better off getting a 2nd hand head?.

Usually will mess up all intake valves and maybe a few exhaust valves and in some instances cause a rod to bend.

For some reason i like the beetle and have urge to put a 3.2 engine and haldex in one [}:)]

good luck with fixing the engine if you lucky it's only a few valves
as eddie said look out for a bent rod they are strong engines but the rods are the weak link sometimes

i take it was on it's first timing belt 1.8t engines need the timing belt changed on the dot

Personally I would bang a cambelt on it first and see what happens

funny you shound say that a boy i work with had his A4 snap a belt and thats exactly what the garage did fired up first time too
mind you it was a tdi don't think you would be so lucky with a 1.8t

never seen anyone so happy to hear a r32 coming to pick him up from the road side even made it back to work in time before start of shift:)

Also took the wheels to the banders 8in fronts and 8.5in rears soon! also fitted original hubcaps

Had the wheels banded and retro fitted hubcaps what are your thoughts?
Wheels were done 8x16 and 8.5x16

Standard on the front as you can just see

Bent rod is still a strong possibility...
    Good luck!

Reason I said this is that I have recently repaired a similar 1400 16v engine and it all looked ok also, and drove fine, but at tickover had a slight tap noise. Eventually replaced the conrods to cure it, having tried a lot of other things first
