Been having an issue with my KR for a while now so I thought I would reach out to the folks on here to see if you guys could advice/suggest anything? I have a standard MK2 1990 16v Gti KR engine and I have this issue that once I've been driving the car for a while and it's warmed up, the car starts hesitating and eventually turns off. In the summer this would happen say after 30mins of stop start driving but last night I was mainly doing A roads and it took a while. When this starts to happen, the car will feel like it's missing while driving and then when I come to a stop, it turns off and then fails to start. When I try to start, the engine turns as per normal but just doesn't start. I have to wait basically for it to cool down and then it will start. So far I've replaced the spark plugs, lifter fuel pump and the perished hose in the fuel tank. I feel this is an electrical issue as it only seems to happen when it's warmed up. Somebody suggested the main fuel pump under the car but before I do that, any suggestions?

    TIA

when it cuts out do you hear the fuel pump run on, then with ignition does the pump prime and when its cranking over is the pump running constant. also check if the rev counter jiggles while cranking

can't recall hearing the fuel pump but it does prime with the ignition. I'll have to have a look at the rev counter next time

So tonight it totally gave up. I was driving for around 15mins in town and it just came to a stop. I pulled over and gave it like an hour to cool down but it's doesn't want to start. I can smell and see fuel dropping down from under the cold start valve which I assume isn't normal. Called the greenflag guy out and he didn't have a clue either. It's being towed home tomorrow now.

Your warm up regulator sounds like it is tired or given up.
It would be right for a car that age.

Would this cause my issue? At the moment I'm thinking either hall sender or fuel pump

Think as Toyotec suggests with WUR, you’re going to have to start off with checking fuel pressures from cold as it warms up. Can buy a gauge relatively cheaply from eBay and below is a great YouTube guide how to go about using it.

So just now I tried another distributor and coil and it started but then turn off. You could hear it popping and stuff did come out of the exhaust. Not sure which one kicked it into life but it was short lived. Its now back not starting so I've left it. I could hear the fuel pump on cranking.

It is not what you think should be based on experience and may not address the root cause of your problem.
Without seeing the vehicle, I have answered your question on the basis of what is likely to fail on a KJet 8v and 16v engine with age.

    Thanks @Toyotec

Can I overhaul the WUR or do I need to look for an replacement?

I see rebuild kits for these and I do recall testing the resistance and it was in range not so long ago. Shall I try the rebuild kit and then check the fuel pressures?

I would recommend a specialist for that type of component, who has the equipment to test the WUR without the car.

KMI PETROL INJECTION in Bedford are the Bosch K-jet experts. They are the people you need for a WUR refurb. Will cost about £150 plus postage but they’re very helpful and very good at what they do.

Quick update. Car is running now, it was the fuel pump but I managed to break the fuel pipe that goes from the pump to the accumulator in the process ☹️

I will get the WUR looked at and maybe call that place Rustbuster suggested
