Woo! Mine is 2 and a bit years away from exemption. But it’s never had an MOT in digital records so it’ll have 2 MOT’s and then never again.

If I finish it that is

    Great !
Love the roof spoiler Saladman !
Also, had my one since new.
Drove it equivalent to more than 8/10ths of the way to the moon !
Then total restore, which is noted in my other threads.
Think 4th oldest in the UK, and poss the oldest mk2 gti on the road....?

Thought I'd do a little audit on the early Mk2s, with gaps for others to add info to, if they wish.

I messaged rubjonny and he was able to track down the info for me. I believe you can also buy a "birth" certificate from VW

Granted it's 3 more years but I just realised that they have amended the rules in Ireland and once the E28 reaches 40, there will be no NCT (MOT) requirements either. I have never gotten an NCT for it and make no mistake those clowns won't be touching it in the next 3 years either. She shall remain a garage queen for another while.

Congrats on the Mk2 reaching that milestone.

    Congratulations on reaching the milestone
Hopefully I’ll get my ‘88 there in 5 years.
Looking forward to not paying £260 tax.
Just hope they don’t change the rules in meantime……
Great to see these cars still on the road in their 30’s and even 40’s

I love all this stuff! Mine will have her 40th next year. Quick question tho. My cars been in storage a couple of years hence no MOT. Does a car have to have a final MOT on its 40th year (or thereafter) to clear it into exemption or can it just be put back on the road by the owner?

I'm pretty sure you just put it back on the road - that's what I will be doing in 2026 all going well. (truth be told she gets a 10 mile run out everytime I've made the journey across the pond). I think the mileage is 78K at the moment.

I'm going to say it and consequences be damned, that E28 is the best car I've ever bought!

Thanks. Sadly I had to put my stock headlight back in even though the cutoffs for the light I built are better than the stock bi-xenon lights on my mk6 gtd. I will be putting my other headlights back on soon

Reminder for anybody with a pre-April built 1984 car - remember to cancel your tax (SORN?) before the end of March if you can, then request historic status from DVLA (can be done at post office counter), you can 'tax' it while still at the same counter. Should avoid overpaying any more road tax than you should have to.
