    hi all

Can anyone help this problem i have. I've fitted a weber carb to my mk1 1.8 clipper and it's leaking fuel. I replaced the rubber seal that sits between the adaptor plate and inlet manifold. When i take the carb off the gasket between the carb and adapter plate seems to be soaked. Any ideas why this would be???

    Thanks for any help

Was the carb new when you put it on, or secondhand?

At that point there should only be the atomised fuel/air mixture getting sucked through the choke barrels into the manifold.
Have you done a very careful check to make sure there are no leaks from further up the carb body running down the side of the carb?

Mine is leaking a liitle as well and will be coming in bits this weekend. The side of the carb with all the linkages is covered in sticky brown fuel residue and it's damp around the chokes under the airbox. I'm guessing the float valve isn't sealing properly so hte float chamber is over filling and coming out of a breather.
I got a genuine Weber service kit from Fastroadcars on Ebay - 17 + P&P. In the meantime I'm still hunting for a Haynes for the DMTL so I can do a proper FAQ

Would you like me to bring my manual into work tomorrow and scan and email the good bits to you?

That would be very handy if you could :) I've no fear of having it in bits or putting it back together but it's not difficult to mess up a setting and end up with a none runner [:$]. which is when you need a manual to at least give you a clue. PM me when you're ready to send them, pretty much any format will do, PDF or jpg would be easiest. Once I've done mine I'll sort out making them available in the FAQ with some pics - though hopefully I'll have my own by then [:D]

    Thanks guys

    The carb was second hand.

When I had the carb off I noticed that looking up from the bottom some holes has brass things in them and others had nothing, sorry if Im not being very clear. As maximo said the mixture should be atomised so was wondering if it could be leaking anywhere underneath.

Not sure what else I can do other than buy a service kit.

There are only a couple or three reasons why it's leaking. It's overflowing as the float needle isn't sealing properly (you get a new one in the kit), a seal or washer has failed (ditto) or something has come loose. The last one really only applies to the external connections which are easy to check. My money is on a problem with the float valve.
I used to road rally in a Mk2 Escort and that regularly overfilled the float chamber - so I kept a handy small hammer and when we smelt fuel I'd give the float chamber a whack to reseat the valve. worked every time  I'd recommend doing the job properly these days!

Did the Weber this weekend and sure enough the carb was a wash with fuel from the float chamber breather. New float valve and all is well
